At the July 19, 2013 event, thirty six teams and several hundred generous donors helped net $10,700 for alumni scholarships, college mini-grants and Distinguished Alumni Awards. Congratulations to the winners in all three flights! As in most years, the weather cooperated. We can also happily report a record number of flag and team sponsors for the fourth year in a row!

West Burlington Entrepreneur Craig Upton (WB 1976) and St. Louis, MO Author, Linda S. (L.S.) Murphy (Keokuk 1995) were honored as 2014 Distinguished Alumni at individual receptions and served as keynote speakers at their respective 2014 graduation venues on May 14th and 15th. The 2013 Distinguished Alumni honored by the SCC Alumni Association and SCC Board of Trustees were Greg Smith, a 1987 SCC West Burlington graduate and principal of Fort Madison High School, and Kathy Gabel, a 1981 & 1984 graduate of the SCC Keokuk Campus and owner of Advanced Home Health Care. Following receptions held in their honor, they provided inspiring keynote speeches at their respective graduation exercises. As is done every year, they also presented scholarships given by the SCC in their honor. Funds are raised at the SCCAA annual golf outing.
Randy Winegard (SCC BurlingtonCampus 1967 AA) and Cathy Richardson (SCC Keokuk Campus 1988 A.A., 1992 A.D.N.) were recognized at separate graduation events as the 2012 Southeastern Community College Distinguished Alumni. Winegard is the President and CEO of Winegard Company in Burlington, Iowa and he is the majority stock holder in Great River Entertainment, Huckleberry Entertainment and Catfish Bend Casino. Richardson, a registered nurse, went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Western Illinois University in 1995. She is a certified Occupational Hearing Conservationist and recently retired from Metzeler Automotive Profile Systems, Iowa Division, in Keokuk as a First Aid Supervisor, Workers’ Compensation Administrator, and Wellness Coordinator.
Nominations for Distinguished Alumni Awards are due annually on August 1 and considered by the SCCAA Board at the October meeting. Recommendations are taken to the SCC Board of Trustees' November meeting for confirmation. See a list of SCC's Distinguished Alumni awardees since the award's inception in 1997.

Nearly 70% of Participating Voters Approved SCC's Bonded Levy
Persons voting in the September 10, 2013 school board election provided a 69.2% approval of the ballot question asking them continue a bonded levy for physical plant purposes at Southeastern Community College - with the intent to support the newly adopted Master Facilities Plan. Bonded levies require a 60% supermajority. This election marks the third time since 1990 that SCC has received voter approval for a bonded levy. For the rest of the story, click here.
All winter and spring College planners have been meeting with architects to develop the detailed plans for the new Health Occupations building at the West Burlington Campus and the new Industrial Maintenance programs building at Keokuk Campus. Following a feasibility study that spanned January/February 2014, SCC and the SCC Foundation approved action on a major gifts campaign to begin Fall 2014. Contributions received will be used to help fill the gap between the bond levy proceeds and the total funds needed to fully implement the Master Facilities Plan.

This year's event, retitled GREAT TASTES, was held Friday, March 28, 2014 at the Pzazz! Event Center in Burlington. The fun started at 6 PM with gorgeous guitar music by alum Jesse Mazzoccoli, fabulous hot & cold hors d'oeuvres, over 60 beverages to taste, including wines (some local wineries' products were available for sale for the first time this year), beers, ales and spirits, plus a raffle, and a silent auction. at 7:30 PM many of the students who are performing in the spring musical, RENT, presented a flash mob, wowing the audience with the show's signature song.
The live auction of unique items started at 8 PM with the serving of desserts, followed by the announcement of raffle winners. With the help of hundreds of generous donors, bidders and volunteers, we beat the 2013 net of $30,000! Click here to see the complete auction list/tasting program.

Learn more about SCC and your fellow alums! Starting in December, the SCC Alumni Association will host monthly Coffee & Conversations on the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM starting September 2014. Events on the West Burlington campus are set for the 1st Tuesday of the month in the Art Gallery, while Keokuk Campus gatherings will be on the 3rd Tuesday in the Cafeteria. A member of the SCC Alumni Association Board of Directors will be present to answer questions about SCC. Come with questions and info to share. The SCC Alumni Office periodically receives calls from employers who are seeking viable candidates, like SCC Alums, for good jobs. Jobs currently available include a Medical Office Administrative Assistant (filing insurance, clerical, phone, greeting patients) in Stronghurst, IL (24-26 hours per week) and four full-time Industrial Supervisors in Fort Madison, IA. At last year's annual event, more than 350 donors, recipients, families and college employees enjoyed the opportunity to meet, express gratitude, have their photos taken together, and to learn more about the SCC Foundation. Following the welcome from SCC President Michael Ash, and messages from student recipients, Penny Savage and Joel Wagenbach, donor Lawrence Matteson presented a special message to the students in the attendance: "Make a goal to pay it forward!" SCC Foundation Board members then made a special presentation to Irvin and Ruth Stein, donors of two annual full tuition scholarships since 1990.

Touted as the coolest new way to make online donations, Giving Tuesday - which follows Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving) and Cyber Monday (first Monday after Thanksgiving) - was initially hatched as a "good feel" way to support victims of Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and will continue annually to let donors support the organizations the love. SCCF participated on December 3, 2013 and it drove some great new donations! Giving Tuesday 2014 is set for December 2. Check it out here.
Happy bicyclists participated in the 5th fun/fundraiser ride in memory of the late SCC Science instructor Dan Ring on Saturday, September 14. Oganizers Kim Tracy, Pam Peterson, Brian McAtee, and Gary Szymula offered FOUR options this year: (1) the ice cream ride; (2) the walk to ice cream; (3) the 15 mile city perimeter ride; and (4) the 50 mile country route ride. Several lucky riders won cool gift certificates! More than $2,500 again was raised for the SCC Foundation Dan Ring Memorial Endowed Nursing scholarship fund! Here's a "tweet" for ya! A Birdies for Charity pledge provides a painless way to support the SCCAA. All it takes is a pledge of 1¢ or more per birdie to be made by the pros at the 2014 John Deere Classic in Moline, IL. If you guess the number of birdies the pros make in 2014, you might win a car or one of 500 other great prizes! If you choose to complete the form and return it to SCCAA (1500 W. Agency Road, West Burlington, IA 52655), JDC's Birdies for Charity staff will invoice you next July 2014! And, 100% of the paid pledge dollars come back to the SCCAA! It's a real win-win for all!
The 2nd annual Alumni Art Show opened July 8 at the SCC West Burlington Campus art gallery - located across the hall from the Welcome Center. A public reception was held Friday, July 19 at 6 p.m. The alums participating in the show elected officers for the new Alumni Fine Arts Chapter at their first official meeting on July 5th: Chair - Tracy Jones; Vice Chair - James Walker Henry; Treasurer - Sean Walker; and Recording Secretary - Casey Luke. SCC alumni art students and music students are encouraged to join the new SCC Alumni Fine Arts Chapter!
In 2012 art alums Julian Menke, Tim Van Ginkel and Serena Stevens launched a facebook page and initiated the first annual alumni show in the SCC WB Art Gallery in February.

Join the SCC Art Collectors Club now until June 30, 2011 and you'll be considered a CHARTER member! Of your $100 fee ($200 for couples; students are free), 75% will go toward art acquisitions and 25% will be used for arts programming. Lovely packets of 10 note cards and envelopes feature original art work by five SCC students and one SCC art faculty member. They sell for $10 per packet and all proceeds go to the SCC Foundation! Participating students include Kim Boomershine, Katie Cole, Abby Darbyshire, Jennifer Stutzman and Julie Foster. Art Faculty member Cathleen Gordon oversaw the students' work and contributed art work as well. The SCC Alumni Association is hosting a DECADE ALUMNI REUNION in February, 2015 (date to be determined). The event will start with a 6:00 pm hors d’oeuvres reception just prior to the men's basketball game, followed by group recognition during the game. Grads of years ending in "5" (e.g., 2005, 1995, 1945) is the target audience. Paid SCC Alumni Association members from those decades will receive FREE admission to the game; while, Decade Alums who are not (yet) members will receive a 50% discount. The Southeastern Community College Alumni Association (SCCAA) was formed in 1991. Membership is open to anyone who has completed a 3 credit hour course at SCC or one if its predecessor institutions. The SCCAA Board of Directors adopted the following mission statement:
"...to encourage lifelong interest in Southeastern Community College by its alumni and friends by creating an atmosphere which promotes positive feelings and interactions between the college and its alumni through a variety of actions, events, services, and communication."
