Gainful Employment
Previously, federal regulations have required institutions to disclose to prospective students certain information about SCC’s Gainful Employment Programs. While all programs at SCC are designed to lead to either employment or college transfer, the U.S. Department of Education has required the disclosure of information for programs that are one-year or less in length. A "Gainful Employment" program at SCC is a diploma or certificate program that leads to gainful employment in a recognized occupation.
However, the Department of Education published a final rule on July 1, 2019, rescinding the Department’s gainful employment (GE) regulations (2014 Rule), effective July 1, 2020. The final rule also allowed institutions to implement the rescission early. Southeastern Community College opted for early implementation effective July 1, 2019.
We continue to believe that students have the right to information about all programs’ costs, course sequence, certification requirements, transfer and career opportunities, potential employment and future wages related to their program of study, among other things; which may be found on specific programs web pages. In addition, every student works with an advisor to create an appropriate academic evaluation plan to ensure students complete a degree, diploma, or certificate in a timely and effective manner. Budget planning, responsible borrowing, and career research are also highly encouraged along the way. We are here to help students get answers to make informed educational decisions and achieve their goals.
