March 1 Deadline for Fall Scholarships from SCC Foundation

The Southeastern Community College Foundation is now accepting applications for scholarships for students who plan to attend SCC in the fall of 2021. Applications are due by 4:30 p.m. CST on March 1.

The Foundation has hundreds of scholarships available totaling an estimated $350,000.

Awards range in size from $100 to full tuition and books and are offered to a wide variety of students. They fall under a multitude of categories including program of study, county of residence, academic accomplishment, financial need, non-traditional students, veterans, and more.

Anyone who plans to attend or is considering attending SCC in the fall is encouraged to apply by visiting the SCC Foundation Scholarship webpage at https://www.scciowa.edu/foundation/sccf_scholarships.aspx .

“We want to help as many students as possible,” says SCC Foundation Executive Director Val Giannettino. “Students only need to fill out one application to have access to all of these scholarships.”

She says the chances of receiving a scholarship are in the applicants’ favor. However, there is one thing applicants often forget --- a letter of reference.

“More than half of the applicants receive at least one award. What we can't stress enough is to start the application early,” Giannettino advises. “This gives those who write a reference letter plenty of time to help the students.”

The application takes about an hour to complete. Giannettino says that one hour could result in thousands of dollars in scholarships.

“It could be the most valuable investment of an hour you'll ever make,” she states.

To be considered for an award, an applicant must take five steps: complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), submit the most recent school transcript or high school equivalency scores, fill out the application online, write an essay about themselves, and contact someone to write a letter of recommendation.

As a service to residents of the area, SCC staff will be available to help applicants complete the FAFSA at its FAFSA Ready Iowa workshop on Tuesday, February 2, at both West Burlington and Keokuk campuses from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
