SCC to Celebrate First-Generation Students on November 8

(West Burlington, IA) – Southeastern Community College is proud to take part in the First-Generation College Celebration on November 8, 2023. The event is part of SCC's TRIO Student Support Services program week-long celebration that highlight the experiences and achievements of first-generation (first-gen) college students.

Comprising approximately 60% of SCC student body, first-gen college students are the first in their families to pursue higher education. Recognizing the unique challenges they face as trailblazers in their families, SCC's TRIO SSS program provides resources and support to first-gen students on their academic journey. This year, SCC is going the extra mile to honor their achievements with a special event and an opportunity for one lucky student.

One highlight of SCC's First-Generation College Celebration is a panel event, where past and current first-generation college students will share their personal experiences, offering insights into the highs, lows, and valuable tips they have acquired along the way. This event is designed to inspire and empower first-generation students as they pursue their academic dreams, while also fostering a sense of community and support.

First-gen students will also be eligible to win a stipend for a free class and gift certificates to the campus bookstore.

SCC Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Allmendinger reflected on her own first-generation college student experience and expressed enthusiasm for the festivities.

"I was a first-gen student, and I think about if I had had the opportunity to gift something like this to one of my family members how happy and proud I would have been,” said Allmendinger. “I am thrilled that we can provide such an opportunity to one of our students.”

These events will take place on November 8, 2023 at SCC campuses in West Burlington and Keokuk. The panel event and scholarship give-away will take place in the private dining room on the West Burlington Campus beginning at 12pm, with a live-stream watch party in the Student Lounge on the Keokuk Campus. All students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to attend.

Don't miss this opportunity to hear the inspiring stories of SCC's first-gen students and to witness the joy of the winning student as they gift the opportunity of education to a family member.
