SCC and Western Governors University Announce Articulation Agreement

The West Burlington Police Department in cooperation with the Fort Madison Police Department executed a search warrant on Sunday evening at the Blackhawk Tower residence hall on SCC's West Burlington campus. Women's basketball student-athlete Angel Maes was taken into custody. Officers recovered a small amount of ammunition, including spent cartridges from Maes’ room and car. No firearms or weapons were found.

The search was related to an investigation of a shooting incident that took place in Fort Madison early Sunday. No one was harmed in the incident.

SCC administrators and residence life staff were present during the search on Sunday evening.

Maes has been placed on temporary academic suspension and is not allowed on campus pending the outcome of the investigation.

Fort Madison police deemed it to be an isolated incident with no threat to students or staff.

Upon being made aware of the situation, SCC staff followed safety protocols, including alerting resident students and staff onsite.

“Maintaining a safe campus for everyone is of utmost importance and we have policies and processes in place to that end,” said President Dr. Michael Ash. “We are cooperating with law enforcement with their investigation and are reviewing the incident internally as well to make sure that protocols were properly followed.”

SCC guidelines ban the possession of weapons while on SCC property. In addition, SCC maintains a number of safety and security measures, including limited points of entry, restricted access entrances, onsite security, video recording equipment, and 24-hour onsite coverage by residence life staff.

While SCC does have a sports shooting team, a number of security measures are in place for safe and proper storage and transportation of related firearms. This equipment was not involved.
